How to Win Back an Employee Who Matters to Your Business
How to Win Back an Employee Who Matters to Your BusinessHow to Win Back an Employee Who Matters to Your BusinessHow to Win Back an Employee Who Matters to Your Business MatusonThe last thing a manager wants to hear is one of his star employees saying, I quit. Yet it happens all the time. But just because a good employee leaves doesnt mean you cant win this employee back.Competition for top talent only seems to increase each year (my 2014 article on talent poaching still remains relevant.) That means youll need to put more effort into retaining high performers by regularly conducting stay interviewsas well as offboarding seasonal hires who you want to return. But if they do walk away, these talent management strategiescan help you win back a high-performing employee.Stay in TouchHow often have you made a decision that you regretted? For most of us, the answer would be often. We all have regrets. So do employees.A common scenario in the workplace involves a good employee who is having a bad day. His manager may look at him the wrong way. The words, I quit fly out of his mouth before he even realizes what hes said. The employee may wish he could take his words back, but he cant so he leaves. One of the best ways to win back good employees is to make it a point to stay in touch. You can do this in a number of ways including sending an occasional email. Let the former employee know youve been thinking about him or her and wanted to reach out to see how they are doing. When doing so, consider including an article that might be of interest to them or perhaps sending a quick note about a local happening that is right up their alley. You can take this process one step further by picking up the phone and asking how their new job is going. When doing so, remind high-performing employees that they are welcome back anytime.Make your Offer IrresistibleOnce a top performer walks away from your company, you can entice your best employees to stay or return by creating a work envir onment that works for them. For example, suppose they gave notice because they are no longer able to work the schedule they were hired for. This is a good employee who is worth keeping. If at all possible, consider adjusting their schedule so that leaving is no longer their only option. Ask them specifically what it will take to retain them. Dont dismiss any ideas until you have had adequate time to consider all of them. You may not be in the position of winning back a good employee by simply offering them more money to come back. However, this doesnt mean you cant entice them to return with a promotion if there is an opening for someone with their job skills and work ethic.Keep in mind that to win back good employees, you will need to think out of the box. Career developmentopportunities are high on the wish list of many these days particularly for Millennial employees.Provide assurances that you will continue to support their career growth. You can do so by committing a dollar amoun t so they can attend courses or work with a coach who can help them elevate their game. Think about whom you know that may make a great mentor for this person. Offer to make an introduction, should they decide to return to your firm.Address Management IssuesBy now you probably have a good idea why your high-performing employees are taking their knowledge and skills elsewhere. Now is the time to take action and correct problem areas that are preventing good employees from staying. For example, its no secret that many people leave companies because of their bossormanager. Is one supervisor in your business having significantly more voluntary turnoverthan the rest? Is this the same supervisor that youve been considering moving out? Do what needs to be done. Remove this supervisor. Then reach out to those high-performers who have left due to their managers. Let them know there is a new management team in place. Ask them to consider coming back. Dont be surprised if some say yes.Continue t o monitor the environment so that you can correct problems before they become big issues. This will help you retain those high-performers that youve worked so hard to secure.Allow People to Leave on their Own TermsIt may seem unorthodox to discuss allowing people to leave on their own terms as part of a story thats focused on how to win back an employee who matters to your business. However, this is exactly what some of the best companies do as part of their employment strategy.Niki Leondakis, CEO of Commune Hotels and Resorts, said it best. We tell our employees we hope youll stay. If you do decide to go, we hope youll come back. When probed further, Leondakis said that many people do return. There is no shame in coming back. And those valued employees who do come back are welcomed with open arms.

6 Things Hiring Managers Never Want to See on a Resume
6 Things Hiring Managers Never Want to See on a Resume6 Things Hiring Managers Never Want to See on a ResumeAs a leading provider of professional career services and one founded by recruiters, ResumeSpice has a unique perspective on what hiring managers, menschengerecht resurces, and recruiters professionals do and dont want to see on a candidates resume. In such a competitive job search environment, its important to not have your resume screened out by avoiding unnecessary (yet, unfortunately) common mistakes.Providing MisinformationThere are many reasons why misrepresenting your skills and experience is never okay.Aside from the obvious ethical issue, theres a high-likelihood you will be caught. Not only do recruiters routinely cross-reference a candidates resume with their LinkedIn profile to see if key information matches, but dont underestimate how well-connected recruiters and hiring managers are. Part of a recruiters job is to be well-connected within the job market ecosyste m. Chances are the recruiter probably knows another talent acquisition specialist or manager from at least one of the companies listed on your resume. A simple verification phone call can uncover costly misinformation. Did you move an end date on one of your jobs to cover up a resume eu-agrarpolitik? Youre better off explaining that gemeinsame agrarpolitik in your cover letter than taking the risk that it doesnt pass verification.Even if you do get the job, companies can come back and let someone go for misrepresenting themselves on their resume or other application materials. See high profile cases such asYahoo CEO Scott Thompson Out After Resume ScandalVeritas CFO Quits Amid Resume RoilNotre Dame Coach Resigns After 5 Days and a Few LiesUnfortunately, the list goes onTypos, Grammar, Spelling, and Other Simple ErrorsNothing will ruin your credibility quicker than errors on your resume. Spelling mistakes, grammar errors, even sloppy formatting can remove your resume from considerat ion. For some positions, recruiters receive thousands of resumes. Dont make a simple mistake and give them an excuse to rule yours out and move onto the next candidate. The team at Resume Spice always recommends having a trusted colleague or friend look over your resume before you submit it. Pick 2-3 people who you know have strong grammar skills. It also helps if you read your resume out loud. Your ear will usually pick up on errors that you miss reading silently. Objective StatementGone are the days of resume objectives. Theyre typically generic statements that dont say much about you as a professional or add much value to your candidacy, so why include them? They can actually hurt you in a few waysFirst, recruiters already know why youre submitting a resume theyre assuming you feel youre qualified for the role. And an objective statement is typically about your objective when applying for a job, its all about what you can do for the employer.Second, what if your objective doesnt e xactly match what the employer is looking for? Youve just unnecessarily ruled yourself out. Weve yet to hear about a candidate getting a role because of their objective statement, but weve seen many passed up because of it.Lastly, objectives are usually placed at the very top of a resume prime real estate Use that space for the meat of your resume, not generic statements.Comical, quirky, or otherwise inappropriate emaille addressesThis one should go without saying, but unfortunately it cant because we see it so often. If youre on the job hunt, you need a professional email account. This is not the time nor the place to express yourself and to show your personality. aisacm or snyaco are not recommended and can quickly land your resume in the no pile. For your job seeking email address, go with some variation of your first name and last name. Something like tmi will do the job.Too much detail from positions long, long agoRecruiters and hiring managers are most interested in what youv e done lately i.e., your last role. After all, its how youve been spending your time most recently and, presumably, your last job or two are most reflective of your current skill set. If youre a more experienced professional (more than 15 years of experience), youll want to weight your resume more heavily to your most recent 1-2 position(s). If the last 10-15 years of experience dont qualify you for the role for which youre applying, its unlikely that a job you had for three years 18 years ago is going to get you the job. Focus on your most recent experience.Unexplained gapsGaps in resumes happen. Whether unanticipated by a layoff or a planned break to travel or move for a spouse, hiring managers understand that most careers are not completely linear and without breaks. However, for gaps longer than a month, hiring managers want to know how youve used your time and how youve remained productive. A good place to address a resume gap is in the cover letter. For gaps longer than six m onths, it becomes even more important to address gaps and we recommend doing so, both in your cover letter and within your resume. If youve been volunteering, taking classes, and/or doing freelance work, use that to fill in the gap. Thats now a job you can put down, with supporting bullets instead of a blank gap without any explanation or context.Resume Spice was built by recruiters and can help you avoid making any of the mistakes above, as well as other common resume, cover letter, LinkedIn profile, and interview preparation mistakes. How to Display Material That Has a Copyright
How to Display Material That Has a CopyrightHow to Display Material That Has a CopyrightYouve completed a masterpiece, and youve had the work copyrighted. The question is, are you finished? The answeris, elend quite. Thats because youll want the world to know that you have your work copyrighted and thereby protected. How you show that your work has a copyright is more a matter of preference than it is an issue of U.S. law. When you use someone elses work, many authors will require that you display their copyright in a certain format. Likewise, you can require that others follow your specifications for using any of the work you produce. For example, you might allow someone to use your work freely for personal use as long as they give you leistungspunkt in a previously agreed upon format. But, you might want to restrict the use of your work for commercial purposes because that means someone else is making money from your efforts. You might also allow, or not allow, use of derivative wo rks, which are changes that youve made to your work. When You Use Someone Elses Material When youre using material from someone else, its very important that you honor the authors request as to how she or hewants credit shown, including how the writer wants their copyrights displayed. Examples of Copyright Formats You can show that youre the author or creator of copyrighted material in several ways including the following Copyright (word) DateExample Copyright 2008Copyright Symbol the Date or Year Something Was CreatedExample March 2008 or 2008Copyright Symbol With WordExample Copyright 2008Symbol Alone (when showing reference to something specific)Example How to Copyright Your Publications written by Anita Newborn. Sometimes, authors also use the words All Rights Reserved, or All Intellectual Rights Reserved. However, neither is necessary because the copyright already indicates that your rights are protected. Do I Have to Show an Actual Copyright Symbol? You dont ha ve to show an actual copyright symbol. That said, its alwaysin your best interest to declare your rights to, and ownership of, a particular work anywhere the work is used or displayed. Should you end up having to sue someone for copyright infringement, it will be easier to prove that the person who used your work without permission was aware that they did not have the right to do so. The unmistakable copyright symbol makes it clear that the person was warned and proceeded ahead anyway. Its worth noting that a creator of work might not want to put a symbol on their work for many reasons. For example, paintings, photographs, and tangible art such as sculptures and furniture would have to be physically altered and stamped with the symbol, which would alter the art. Metadata and program coding are two other examples. A creator might have written the code or metadata, but its not possible to stamp the work with a copyright symbol. Its Always Better to Assume You Have No Rights The b ottom line is that if you did not personally create something, you most likely do not have the right to reuse it unless its in the public domain, even if you give credit to the source. If you ever have any question about whether you can use something, your best recourse is to contact the creator and ask them for permission, and if they say yes, to get that in writing.

Learn How to Ask for a Raise in a Sales Position
Learn How to Ask for a Raise in a Sales Position Learn How to Ask for a Raise in a Sales Position Take a look at your compensation package. Does it include a base salary along with the opportunity to earn commissions based on your sales performance? If you are like many sales professionals, your comp plan includes both a salary and a commission component. And since a base salary is involved, you may be wondering what is the best way to ask for a salary raise. But before figuring out how to ask for a raise, it may be a better idea to figure out when to ask for a raise. First Things First Before you head any further down the road of asking for a raise, make sure that your employers compensation plans allow for raises and that all sales professionals salaries are not set according to job title, quota levels or tenure with the company. Many large sales corporations employ a position-bound salary model in order to ensure consistency throughout the organization. Have You Overachieved, Consistently or Dramatically? Timing is everything. And when it comes to asking for a raise, your timing needs to be impeccable. If youve recently started in your sales position and had a few good months during which youve hit or exceeded your assigned quota, asking for a raise may be a sign of bad timing. Though you may have demonstrated an ability to hit your quota, you havent proven yourself for a long enough period. Walking into your bosss office and asking for a raise will probably raise suspicions over your long-term commitment to your employer rather than get you that desired raise. If, however, youve been in your position for at least a full year, have not only achieved your quota but have drastically overachieved your quota, and you have demonstrated a strong set of sales skills, then it may be an appropriate time to ask for a salary raise. Promotion or Raise? Asking for a raise in a sales position is a lot like asking for a promotion. In both situations, you need to fully believe that youve earned the right to ask for what you want, that your employer also feels that you have earned the right and that you are prepared to present your reasons why you feel you deserve the promotion or raise. Lack any of these 3 elements and you may be out of luck. Asking for a Raise If youve done all your homework as detailed above and feel that you truly deserve a raise, its time to get on your bosss schedule and get prepared to ask for your raise. It is important to let your manager (boss, supervisor, etc) know what you want to talk about but not to specifically state that you are going to ask for a raise. A possible meeting request could be Id like to meet with you to review my performance over the past year and to discuss a request of mine that is very important to me. Asking for a meeting using this approach wont get your manager on edge and she will understand that what you want to talk about is very important to you. If she is a good manager, what is important to you should be important to her as well. When you are sitting down with your manager, you need to make sure that you dont take an aggressive or an entitled approach. Both will put your manager on the defensive and wont serve you well. Instead, lay out the facts and reasons why you feel you deserve a raise, acknowledge that giving raises is a challenging position for your manager but do not offer an excuse to your manager for not giving you the raise you deserve! It is also smart to know exactly how much of a raise you are asking for. Saying, Whatever you feel is fair is a wonderful way to set yourself up for disappointment. What to Do If Things Go Wrong If youve done a good job in presenting your case and used no idle threats but you dont get the raise you wanted, thank your manager for her time and ask her when you can revisit the topic of a raise and go out and increase your sales excellence. Many employees, after being turned down for a raise, become bitter and let their sales results slip. They think that by slacking off instead of returning to their jobs with an ever greater passion will somehow hurt their employer. In fact, the only person this attitude hurts is the one with the attitude. Yes, having a request for a raise rejected is disheartening and it may be harder to not only return to your job with the same passion you had before asking for a raise but to return to your position with even more passion; doing so is the best way to prove your worth to your employer. Your manager may expect your results to fall off after rejecting your request. But when she sees your results increasing, she may just call you in for another discussion before you think its time for another chat.

Myers Briggs ENTP Type and Career
Myers Briggs ENTP Type and Career Myers Briggs ENTP Type and Career Im a what? You may have asked that question after finding out youre an ENTP. And why wouldnt you have wondered aloud what those letters mean? They seem to make little sense. However, once you find out what each letter means and how you can use all four together to help make career-related decisions, youll appreciate the insight this information offers. How ENTP Relates to the Myers Briggs Personality TypesENTP is one of 16 personality types identified by psychiatrist Carl Jung. Jung theorized that individuals personality types were made up of four pairs of opposite preferences for the way in which they choose to do certain things. The four pairs are:Introversion [I] and Extroversion [E]: how one energizesSensing [S] and Intuition [N]: how one perceives informationThinking [T] and Feeling [F]: how one makes decisionsJudging [J] and Perceiving [P]: how one lives his or her lifeBefore moving on to an explanation of what each preference means, here are some important things to keep in mind. First, these are just preferences, and while you may prefer to energize, process information, make decisions or live your life in a certain way, you can do the opposite if a situation requires it. Second, your preferences tend to interact, and each preference in your four-preference type affects the other three. Finally, your preferences may change throughout your life.E, N, T, and P: What Each Letter of Your Personality Type Code MeansE: Extroversion, or as it is sometimes spelled, extraversion, means that you are motivated by other people. You would be more successful in an environment that allows you to work with other people, for example on a team, rather than alone. N: As someone who prefers to use your intuition when processing information, you rely on more than your five senses. You can look beyond what is physically in front of you and imagine what could be. This puts you in a good position to take advantage of future opportunities.T: Your preference for thinking means that you use logic rather than emotion to make decisions. You analyze problems and consider their consequences. Only after doing that, will you take action. P: As someone who is perceiving, you tend to be flexible. Last minute changes dont bother you. Deadlines, however, do.Using Your Code to Help You Make Career-Related DecisionsYour personality type code can play a role in making career choices. When choosing a career look at the middle two letters, N and T. They are the most relevant for this purpose. Since you like to imagine what could be, a career that lets you pursue new ideas would be good for you.Remember, though, that you like to think things through carefully so pick a career that values that preference. You dont want to pursue a career that involves quick decision-making. It will be stressful for you. Some possible career choices are engineering technician, management consultant, loan officer,? and dentist. When weighing job offers, consider the work environment. Since you are energized by others, look for a situation in which you are not working alone too much. You should also think about your preference for flexibility and c onsider jobs that arent too structured, particularly those with tight deadlines.Sources:The Myers-Briggs Foundation Website.Baron, Renee. What to Include in the Education Section of a Resume
What to Include in the Education Section of a Resume What to Include in the Education Section of a Resume Whats the best way to include your education on your resume? In the education section of your resume, list the schools you attended, the degrees you attained, your GPA if you are a student or a recent graduate, and any special awards and honors you earned. You should tailor the education section of your resume to fit your circumstances, including whether or not you are still a student, how much work experience you have, and how many academic achievements you have. By including the right information in the education section of your resume, you can impress your employer and secure an interview. What to Include in the Education Section of Your Resume The essential information to include in the education section is your degree(s) and the schools you attended. You can also give more specific information, including your major and minor. You can also include the year you graduated, although that is not required. Include your grade point average (GPA) if you are currently a student or are 1-2 years out of school, and if your GPA is strong (about a 3.5 or higher). Also, include any honors or awards you have received in school. These can range from Latin honors (such as cum laude or magna cum laude) to Deanâs List to other awards. You can also include extracurricular clubs, charitable groups, or Greek organizations where you were active and/or held a leadership role. Also, include any professional development courses and certifications. You can also list any licenses you have unless you have a separate section of your resume where you include this information. Where to Put the Education Section of Your Resume Current students or recent college graduates will likely want to put the education section towards the top of the resume. This is because students typically have limited work experience. In this case, you want to highlight your academic successes. If you have been out of school for at least a couple years, you might move this section towards the bottom of your resume. By this time, you have enough work experience to highlight that you donât need to rely on your education. Tips for the Education Section of Your Resume Consider subsections. If you have a lot of information to include in the education section of your resume, consider breaking this section into subsections. The main section might include your schools and degrees, and then you can have other sections such as âAwards and Honors,â âCertifications,â and âProfessional Development.â If you held a leadership role in a school-affiliated organization (such as a club, sport, or Greek organization), you can list that below the Awards and Honors line. Provide specifics (if useful). If the sub-college of your university is well known and relevant (e.g., say you graduated from the hospitality school of your university and are applying for a job in hospitality) you can include that before you include your university name. For example, you could say âSchool of Hospitality, XYZ College.â You can leave out your GPA. If you are a student or recent graduate and your GPA wasnât great, but you have other accolades, just leave the GPA out and put something else, like âXYZ Award Recipient.â Once you are out of school for a couple years, you should take your GPA out of your resume no matter what. You can leave out high school (after a while). Once you have been in college for a year or so (or once you are in some other sort of continuing education), you can leave your high school degree and GPA out of your resume. However, you should mention your high school diploma (or GED) if it is your highest degree. Tell the truth. It is very easy for an employer to confirm whether or not the education information in your resume is true or not. He or she can simply check your transcript. Therefore, be honest. For example, if you are not happy with your GPA, leave it out, but donât make it up. Resume Education Section Template You can use the following template to help structure the education section of your resume. Keep in mind that you can change and remove any of this information to fit your own circumstances and the job for which you are applying. EDUCATION SECTION College NameYear of graduationDegree, Major, and MinorGPA Awards and HonorsInclude any academic achievements here, including Latin honors, honors within your major, and more. CertificationsInclude any professional or educational certifications you have received. Professional DevelopmentInclude any professional development experiences, including courses (both online and in person) and seminars. You might also mention here if you are a member of any relevant professional organizations. If you hold a position within the organization, mention that as well. Military Enlistment Bonuses and Re-Enlistment Bonuses
Military Enlistment Bonuses and Re-Enlistment Bonuses Military Enlistment Bonuses and Re-Enlistment Bonuses The United States military services use enlistment bonuses to attract recruits into jobs that are experiencing shortages in new recruit volunteers. Generally, these are set-cash amounts in exchange for agreeing to serve for four to six years in a specific military specialty. The Army offers bonuses for some two and three-year enlistments as well. Attracting New Military Recruits There can be several reasons why the service may have problems attracting new recruits to some military specialties. Two of the most common is that the job has very high qualification standards and/or the job simply doesnt sound attractive. Enlistment bonuses are usually paid once initial training is complete (basic training and job training), upon arrival at the first duty station. Some of the services pay the entire bonus in one lump sum, while other services pay a portion of the enlistment bonus upon arrival at the first duty station, and the remainder of the bonus in periodic payments. If a recruit fails to complete their entire contracted enlistment period in the job they agreed to, they must return any unearned portion of the bonus in most cases. For example, if a recruit enlists in a specific job for four years with an enlistment bonus of $8,000 and becomes medically unqualified for the job after the first two years, he/she would have to return half of the bonus amount for the second two years. Incentivizing Re-enlistment bonuses, on the other hand, are used to entice troops to re-enlist in a job that the military is experiencing shortages in. Generally, this is because the job is difficult or otherwise unattractive or the job is in high demand in the civilian job market. Re-enlistment bonuses are computed by multipliers assigned to specific jobs in re-enlistment zones. For example, Zone A is for those with less than six years of service. If a job has a re-enlistment bonus multiplier of 3 for Zone A, that means those re-enlisting with less than six years of service would multiply their base pay by 3, then multiply that by the number of years they are re-enlisting for, and that would be their re-enlistment bonus amount. 50 percent of the re-enlistment bonus is usually paid at the time of re-enlistment, with the remainder paid in equal annual installments for the remainder of the enlistment period. As with enlistment bonuses, if the member fails to stay in that job for the entire re-enlistment period, they must repay any unearned portion of the bonus they already received. Both enlistment bonuses and re-enlistment bonuses are taxable income with one exception. If you re-enlist in a combat zone and qualify for a re-enlistment bonus, the entire bonus amount is tax exempt.

FOBO is secretly ruining your life heres how to escape it
FOBO is secretly ruining your life â" hereâs how to escape it FOBO is secretly ruining your life â" hereâs how to escape it You only let yourself buy one novel at a time when you go to the bookstore, so you scour the shelves for hours (to the point of exhaustion), trying to make sure that you pick the absolute best read.Youâre brilliant enough to have multiple new job offers, but instead of feeling proud of yourself, youâre stressed AF writing out all of those pro/con lists to confirm that youâre making the true best choice. You have a Bumble date offer on the table, but are anxious about committing because itâs possible that another, more enticing offer could come along for the same night. You, dear friend, are dealing with some serious FOBO: the fear of better options. Now, FOBO isnât all bad. According to The New York Times columnist Tim Herrera, people who are all about the maximization of potential outcomes do tend to make the better choices in life. The problem, though, arises once that choice is finally made. Because of all of that stress and run-around, you enjoy the result a hell of a lot less than you would if you had just used your natural instincts and made your decision with your gut earlier on in the process. So how do you make the drawbacks of this decision fatigue disappear, you ask?It all comes down to determining your personal threshold for your choices that you wonât fall below. Ask yourself what minimum will still feel âgood enoughâ to you to make you happy with your end decisions, so when new opportunities arise to pick and choose, youâre arenât as inclined to hold out for the best of the best. Because in reality, the middle-of-the-road option is usually perfectly fine and will give you what you need.Give it a try. Buy the third book you pick up rather than the twentieth. Go with the job that fuels your passions and then negotiate the benefits that will boost your bank account. And give that Bumble date a chance. You never know how itâll end up.This article originally appeared on Swirled.com.
