Securing the Power Grid Against Cyber Attack
Securing the Power Grid Against Cyber Attack Securing the Power Grid Against Cyber Attack Securing the Power Grid Against Cyber AttackDigital systems control the majority of the U.S. power grid because theyre able to bring intelligence to, and keep power flowing across, the countrys geographically dispersed, complex physical network. But about once every four days, a cyber attack or physical attack strikes a part of that power grid, a USA Today analysis of federal energy discovered in spring 2015. Cyber attacks on the power grid include malware-spreading campaigns that can shut down systems. A successful cyber attack can dismantle the power grid for months or years and leave potentially millions of Americans in the dark, according to a National Research Council report. Now, researchers at Georgia Tech are set to demonstrate to the U.S. Department of Defense the technique theyve created to thwart attacks. It identifies all devices on electrical grid control networks and instantly depict susing computer modeling techniqueshow data that passes over the grid will affect it.Utilities and energy delivery systems are unique in several ways. They provide distribution over a large geographic area and are composed of disparate components that work together as the systems operating state evolves, says Seth Walters. Hes a Georgia Tech Research Institute Research scientist and a principal investigator on the project.Relevant security technologies need to work within the bandwidth limitations of unterstellung power systems in order to see broad adoption and they need to account for the varying security profiles of the components within unterstellung power systems, Walters says. The Department of Energy has awarded Georgia Tech $1.7 million to help detect cyber attacks on the nations utility companies. Image Georgia TechIn effect, the technique can analyze the data enclosed within packets to determine whether those packets give the grid legitimate operating instructions or contai n cyber attack instructions, says Raheem Beyah, an associate professor in the school of electrical and computer engineering at Georgia Tech.Beyah also leads the Communications AssuranceandPerformance Group, which works with researchers from other Georgia Tech labs and institutes to develop, test, and deploy the intrusion detection system for the DoD.Digital electricity technology transmits electricity in brief, discrete packets that contain energy and data. The packet may contain commands. One packets contents might include a command to open a breaker, for example. But grid attacks can be enclosed within the electronic packets, Beyah says. Its these commands the Georgia Tech system studies.Traditionally, security systems look at digital signatures or anomalies in behavior in the traffic that comes across the network, Beyah says. But grid attacks wouldnt be caught by those systems. They wont be a part of the signature database, and the behavior of the traffic can be normal. The Georgia T ech system inspects each packet that moves across the system and plugs its contents into a faster-than-real-time model of the grid to see if opening the packet would destabilize the grid, he adds. The key here are continually updated physics-based models of the live grid that take into account the dynamics of all the devices on the grid as well as present grid traffic. That is, the software automatically estimates how the command would affect grid operation. When the system receives a command, it can inject it into model to see how the grid will respond, Beyah says.If the packets contents would destabilize the grid, the system doesnt accept that packet and it then automatically creates rules that dont allow similar packets on the network in the future. The Georgia Tech departments and institutes that have worked jointly to create the technology have already tested it in the lab. In fall 2016 theyll run a field test at an operating transmission substation in Pensacola, FL. In December, t he Georgia Tech researchers will run a larger test at that site before DoD sponsors, Beyah says. The technique is one of the results of a $1.7 million DoD contract that saw researchers from Georgia Tech schools and institutes work together to develop the cyber-attack thwarting technologies. Other groups on the project include the Georgia Tech National Electric Energy Testing, Research, and Applications Center (NEETRAC), the Strategic Energy Institute (SEI) and the Cyber Technology and Information Systems Laboratory (CTISL).Jean Thilmany is an independent writer.Learn more about the latest energy technologies at ASMEs Power and Energy.Relevant security technologies need to work within the bandwidth limitations of these power systems and they need to account for the varying security profiles of the components within these power systems.Seth Walters, Georgia Tech Research Institute

How to attract and hire Americas military spouses
How to attract and hire Americas military spousesHow to attract and hire Americas military spousesHow to attract and hire Americas military spousesWhile you might already be familiar with veteran hiring and military-friendly branded companies, the effort to hire military spouses is an initiative that is starting to gain momentum. Organizations that are implementing a military spouse hiring program agree that theyre tapping a talented group of dedicated people who bring great value to their organizations. What you need to know about military spousesLike their partners, military spouses often do not have traditional resumes because they move frequently. According to Monsters 2018 Veteran Spouses Survey, 74% of military spouses said they have found it difficult to get hired into a new job wherbeie they moved.Whats more, two in three respondents believe it is difficult to find a job that takes their military lifestyle into consideration, and half of military spouses who are currently work ing feel underemployed.Despite the nations sub-4% unemployment rate, this group also faces much higher unemployment numbers in the 20-30% range, says Kathy Roth-Douquet, CEO and Board Presidentof Blue Star Families, a national non-profit which supports military families through a variety of programs. But heres the thing Military spouses are really talented, educated, skilled, experienced an excellent source of talent, says Roth-Douquet, and companies that dont realize that are missing out.In fact, military spouses represent one of the most underappreciated and overlooked talent communities, says Susan Fallon, vice president of global strategy and business developmentfor and Military.com.Around 33% have college degrees, and if you look at the cohorts under 34 years of age, their education levels are really high, she says, thanks in part to the free training and education benefits that many military spouses have access to.Military families are also known for their strength. There is a level of resiliency, leadership, and grit that this particular part of the workforce represents. You can train and educate on skills, but you cant train on those leadership attributes that many military spouses bring to the table, says Fallon.Heres how to get startedRead resumes with a different lensIts important for recruiters to understand that resume gaps are usually due to a commitment to a national mission, not an inability to hold down a job, says Douquet. Whether its successfully reintegrating into new communities, creating structure out of chaos, maintaining calm in stressful situations, or doing volunteer work, pay attention to those skills. People attached to a mission-driven focus can bring a lot of benefits to the workplace, says Douquet.Show that youre a military spouse-friendly employerTo reach this segment of the workforce, you need to let them know that youre interested in hiring them, says Fallon. The best way to do that is to say so, while also showing spouses in y our workforce and highlighting positions that have flexible structures and portability.Have a point person who understands this population. Many companies that are successful in reaching this pool have a military spouse as a point of contact who can appreciate unique family situations and can help them navigate through hiring and onboarding, Fallon says.Discuss a long-term career pathMost spouses want to get into a career, not just a job, but because of the likelihood that they will be moving every three years, military spouses need portable jobs, says Fallon. That way, theyre not losing seniority, not losing pay, and the company can retain that talent and investment.Walk the talkDouquet recalls only getting one weeks notice that her husband was going to be deployed for a year. When something like that happens, you have to allow the family to take some time and make accommodations for that situation, she says.Partner with military spouse organizations and programsThere are a number o f organizations that can help companies connect with military spouses. These includeMilitary.comand Monster.comThe Military Spouse Employment Partnership Programfrom the Department of DefenseThe Chamber of Commerce FoundationBlue Star Families SpouseforceprogramCan you combine your veteran and military spouse hiring efforts?Just three years ago, Booz Allen didnt even have a count of how many military spouses they employed, says Andrea Inserra, Booz Allens executive vice president and chair of veterans agenda. But with one third of its workforce being military connected already, and the fact that it has 80 locations worldwide, it clicked that a military spouse-specific initiative made sense. We had to step back and understand who are the military spouses at Booz Allen so we can help them in their transition, she says. Today, Booz Allen has over 400 military spouse employees, and a recruitment team that is dedicated to that segment. As soon as they have orders to move, we can help them identify work they can do in their new region or telework, says Inserra.More important even than giving a military spouse a job is creating a corporate culture where hiring managers understand the value military spouses bring to the table and where those employees can find accommodation for their unique challenges, says Amy Bushatz, executive editor of Military.com.Understanding that a spouse may not have flexibility when it comes to which days to take as vacation thanks to deployment schedules or homecomings, or offering ways for employees who have built trust to either work remotely or, if possible, transfer to a new location, are great examples. Some companies like Starbucks and Walmart have really strong veteran and spouse hiring programs, says Douquet. And Prudential has taken their efforts a step further by helping to create policy that reduces barriers for military spouses who work overseas.Just as with veterans, recruiting military spouses can be a worthwhile investment that helps you fill your talent gaps and youll be doing something good for the nation.

Cultural Fit The Benefits and How to Include It In Your Hiring Process - Spark Hire
Cultural Fit The Benefits and How to Include It In Your Hiring Process - Spark HireHave you ever worked somewhere that didnt feel right? Perhaps the culture was more relaxed than you were used to, or maybe the environment had more of a hands-off feel than you preferred. If you have been in a work environment that didnt mesh well with the way you prefer to work, then you understand how important it is for a company to consider cultural fit when hiring.ERE.net stresses the importance of good cultural fit and how it is connected with a more positive work environment and happier employees. When you have employees who fit in and enjoy their job, you will have a more successful business. This makes hiring for cultural fit of key importance and all businesses should consider how to incorporate this into their hiring process. When understanding the importance of cultural fit, you should take the time to consider 3 important items before hiring.1.Identify your culture and what you are looking forBefore you can ever determine if someone is a cultural fit, you need to first determine the culture of your business. Is your culture relaxed or more formal? Is it kollektiv oriented where employees are constantly interacting, or is it the type of environment where employees are working independently more often? These are all key questions to consider when identifying your company culture.Once you have determined your culture, you will then need to consider the type of employee that will be most successful in your environment. If your culture is very team oriented then you will want an employee who enjoys working with others in order to get the job done. On the other hand, if your culture is more independent with little interaction between employees, you will want to hire someone who enjoys working alone.2.Ask the right questionsAfter you have determined your culture and the type of candidate who will be most successful in your culture, you will then need to establish the right q uestions to ask during the einstellungsgesprch process. This is a key factor in hiring for cultural fit. When you ask the right questions, you can ensure that the candidate you hire will fit in and enjoy working on your team.Ask questions such asWhat type of management style do you prefer? What kind of environment did you work in previously and what did you like / dislike about it?How do you communicate with your coworkers? What does teamwork mean to you?Listen carefully to the candidates responses to determine if they are being truthful and sincere. Watch out for candidates who try to answer vaguely, without telling you their likes or dislikes when it comes to previous environments they have worked in. I guarantee the candidate has a preference when it comes to the type of culture they work in and you want to get a good feel for that.3.Check referencesAfter you have interviewed the candidate and you feel that she will fit in, NEVER skip checking references. When you are checking refe rences, be sure to ask questions surrounding the type of work environment the candidate has worked in and the type of culture she works best in.Checking references can help you to clarify the responses you received from the candidate during the interview process, as well as give you piece of mind when it comes to cultural fit.How have you modified your interview process to ensure the right cultural fit?
